- In olden times mass was celebrated up in Loughlin's big field at Ballymacoola.
They used to erect a big stone for an altar. Sometimes the soldiers would come on them before the mass was finished. The priests then suffered terrible torments and one priest was dragged through the fields over at Joyces of Ballindinis and killed.
The man that killed him, hanged himself three years after at Joyce's Gate. Mr Smiddy who lived at Ballyhonak also killed his mother in the same place one evening when he was going home. There are several forts in this district. In Mr Ronayne's field at Ballymorisheen there is a big fort and there are steps going down into it. You could walk underground for about a mile.
Lismaloughlin was a great hiding place in the penal times. The soldiers used to hide there. Moor's rock (now called Smiths Rock in Cliffords field) was another great rock for celebrating mass. The snow would fall very heavily sometimes and the poor people suffered with the cold very much going to midnight mass.(continues on next page)- Collector
