    Leave my hand upon your lily breast or I won't live a year
    For I would swim the lovely Suir and the Shannon after thee
    And the equals of Lough Rea's lass I never yet did see.

    I would rather than my horse and my bridle for to steer
    Or the game of the park where often hunt the deer
    Or the boats that sailed up harbour to Limerick this year
    I would not mention the name of Lough Rea's lassie dear.

    Take my blessing back to Connaught for it was a sporting place
    And to you also Valentine, I longed to see your face
    For the mountains being so high and so mighty far away
    And the river Shannon waters are the cause of my delay
