    killed or wounded numbers of the attackers. The defenders then charged the remainder of them and put the majority of them to the sword.
    The story goes that the garrison held out for quite a long time. At first an English battleship sailed up the Shannon, shelled the castle with cannon balls which battered it to the ground with the exception of the wall still standing.
