  1. There are three fairy forts in this district. In this district they are called "forts" and very rarely raths or lisses. Just as you pass along to Newcastle West you can plainly see the three of them on the side of the road a quarter of a mile from the village. These forts are situated in the town-lands of Shanid, Lios Mianac is in the townland of Ballycormick and Knockguara fort is in the townland of Shanid Lower. Shanid Fort is beside Shanid Castle. They are all in view of one another and are circular in shape. Lios Mianac is surrounded with bushes. Shanid is not surrounded with bushes, but with a big mound of earth and stones.
