  1. First the lime stones are drawn to the kilns by means of a horse and cart. If the stones are too large, they are broken with a hammer. Then every second layer of turf and lime stone are put into the kiln, until it is full. Then it is ignited from underneath. Accordingly as the lime is burned, it comes out at the eye of the kiln, and then it is drawn away, and the same work is repeated until the lime is all burned.
    The lime is then used for white-washing and the farmers spread it over their lands. It is also put into wells for purifying the waters.
