In my locality long ago the usual time for getting married was Shrove. In Shrove people go around sometimes making matches, these are called Match-makers. If a farmer had an only son and he wished him to be married to a girl with a good fortune he would try to find a girl with a good fortune. Then the girl's people would come and walk the boy's farm and look at the stock.
