    The County of Limerick we pray
    And listen to me the truth I declare

    With bonfires through blazing through Limerick o'er
    Tithes were collected during the tithe war and several tenants were killed or wounded in fights in this locality. Money or cattle and in some cases both were collected by force. The tenants used black thorn sticks and pitch forks. A pitch battle was fought near Bruree by the tithe gatherers with police and military one the one hand and an army of tenants on the other the police and soldiers were routed after great slaughter.
    The tithe war was mostly a night war. The sons of labourers dressed strangely with a straw rope about their waists or their coats turned inside out, or a white band of rag about their hats. They had odd nicknames for their bands, the Blackfeet
