- Local fairs are held in Rathkeale each month. Long ago buyers used to come to farmers houses to buy cattle. This is not done nowadays, as people who have cattle to sell go to the fairs. Luck money is generally given in the buying and selling of cattle.
When a bargain has been made, the parties strike hands to show that they are satisfied. When animals are being sold, marks of different kinds are put on them to distinguish them from other herds. There is always a special fair held for cattle, sheep, and pigs, and for horses. Long ago fairs were held in different places through the country. In my district there is a field called Fair Hill. Long ago fairs were held in it, and ever since it has been called Fair Hill.(continues on next page)- Collector
