    To myself and to my country I was never any use

    They were glad to see me sail away from Inish Fail.
    Early on a cold March morning.

    When I landed in the U.S.A. I had to go to work.
    They keep no loafers over there so it I could not shirk.
    There was no-one there to greet me so I faced it like a man.
    Saying I'll show them at home what I can do.
    And save up all I can.

    And now that I'm returning with my
    pockets lined with gold.
    They had arms out stretched to greet me as soon as they were told.
    But I coldly turned from them and said there must be a mistake.
