They then would roll the pitch into a small coil and turn it up at one end. then they would leave it on a window. to harden. Then when they wanted to light it they would light the turned up end of it. They held the roll in their hands and when the top was burned down they would turn the coil while burning. This was called a Páíoeóg.
The "Paddy" LampWhen the paraffin oil was first produced and when the people had no lamps they used to fill a bottle with oil and get a cork to fit the bottle. Then they made a hole in the cork and brought a wick through the hole in the cork. A bit of the wick would be above the cork and the rest in the oil in the bottle. When the wick would burn down to the cork they would pull the wick up another bit This was practiced in Kilfinane district. This kind of lamo was called a "Paddy(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
