- The houses in olden times thatched. The bed was placed in the kitchen by the wall. The fireplace was always at the gable wall. The houses had no chimneys only a hole in the thtach and a bucket with no bottom was placed on the hole. The thatch the used were rushes. There was no windows or rooms to the houses. The beds were called settles. By somse people the fire was made in the centre of the floor
