- Beggars, tramps, tinkers, hawkers still call, around the district. Mostly the same people call, but a stranger comes occassionally. Some of them are very poor but more are reputed to have money.Some of them sell laces, [?], cups and saucers, pictures, flowers ([?]), nets, statues, studs pins, tie-pins, camphor, starch, blue. Some people buy from them. They are often only an excuse for begging to keep within the law. Others [?] as gipsies sell rustic tables, flower stands etc which they make by the roadside. from furze bushes etc. The people generally do not welcome them especially gipsies and tinkers as they are supposed to steal if they get the chance. They often put their animals into fields for grazing when the people are in bed, and fowl etc. are often stolen and eaten. Potato pits and vegetables are often raided by them also. Tinkers and gipsies often remain for a week or more in one encampment, but(continues on next page)
