- About the year 1919 there came to this district a great plague or fever some of the crops failed and also the people say that it was the world-war which caused it. The gas which escaped from it was swept away by the wind and caused sickness and plague all over the world.
Also some of the crops failed and some of the people were very badly off. They had to eat potatoes for their breakfast and dinner. Sometimes they got a plate of porrage with a little sugar and a cup of milk. Seldom they got a cup of tea or a bit of bread because it was not to be got. About two or even three persons died in some of the houses from the effects of the plague.- Collector
