    of whom he made a great slaughter. He demolished the castle and burnt the town from the inner citadel to the outer walls. About the same date, a wooden tower or bretasche, is mentioned as being there. In 1827 there were remains of four castles and a fortified gate. In Caherconlish there is traditionally said to have been a 'college' the site of which is still known as the 'college field' in which dwelt the Friars who served the church.
    As Caherconlish was a rectory impropriate in Abbey Owney, it seems probable that the church here was a collegiate one served either by some of the monks, who were in Priests Orders, or else by a body of secular clerks.
