- (continued from previous page)Mr. Tim Hartigan succeeded Mr. Mc Donald in Bettyville House and lived there until his eviction after which the land agent managed the farm with Property Defence or Emergency Men as caretakers. After years the place reverted to the Hartigans once more.
There is a story of a turkey cock been seen occasionally in the old days. This bird paid nocturnal visits to certain rooms in the house. I heard it was banished or confined to an apartment in the cellars. There is a story told of the appearance of this bird when some invited guests were assembled in the drawing room one night. A priest from Toryhill House which was then Parochial residence attended. It is conjectured that most of the guests at this party were Protestants and about midnight when festivities were well advanced, a turkey cock fluttered over the heads of the party and disappeared. The priest had an intuition that perhaps he should not be there. He ordered his man to get horse and trap ready for departure. When passing a part of the avenue the horse refused to pass until the driver dismounted and led the animal past this particular spot. When the priest arrived home his housekeeper told him that there came a loud knocking at the hall door of the Parochial House and singularly it occured at the identical time that the spectre appeared at Bettyville House. Mr. E. Hartigan, the present owner of Bettyville, told me that his family have had no uncanny experience while residing there, but I understand Masses have been offered up there often.- Informant
