Wild birds in this district are the Blackbird, Thrush, Magpie, Robin, Yellow Hammer, Willywagtail, Sea-gulls, Plovers, Partridge, Pheasant, Grouse, Snipe, Curlews and the migratory birds including Swallow, Corncrake, Cuckoo, Wild Duck and Wild Geese.
The wild geese come from Scotland to this district in November. They are regarded as a sign of frost and severe weather.
The wild ducks come from Norway in the month of November. They are found on the Shannon and are shot down.
Snipe are found in Redwood Bog. They are very plentiful and are shot. They are considered a very tasty dish when they are roasted in a saucepan with butter or dripping.
