- Marriage Customs Nowadays we can have marriage ever day of the year. Long ago marriages were forbidden during (during) Lent and Advent. During shrove most marriages were celebrated. Shrove is the time between christmas and Lent.Long ago there were a great many customs connected with marriages. The people were most particular about observing these customs, for example the parents would see to it that when a girl was getting married what she would wear:
Something old and something new
Something borrowed and something blue
The parents would also advise the girl about the colours she should choose as they beleived:-
Married in blue your lover will be true,
Married in green ashamed to be seen,
Married in grey will live far away,
