- (continued from previous page)Tim Ryan taught there. Cuneen was from near Borrisoleigh and Ryan was from Templederry. The teacher used sleep in the school at night. The teachers should be paid by the scholars. Arithmetic, English and Writing were the principal subjects taught. Irish was not used at all. They used to have a reader and a slate and a book they used call a "roster", They had copybooks and pens made out of quills and ink made out of blackberries. The children used sit around by the wall like people at a wake.There was no blackboard used. The teachers remained as long as they would like to stay.
- There was an old hedge school in one of Andy Flannery's fields. The name of it was the local college of Bealaclave. The hedge school was situated in Bealaclave about a mile and a half from Rear Cross, townland of Bealaclave parish of Kilcommon, Co.Tipp. The school was held under a large whitethorn bush. it was a man that taught in this school. His name was Mr Kennedy. This teacher was staying(continues on next page)
