- The rush hat is the commonest of homemade toys. It is made from rushes and a scallop.
Get the scallop and split it in two; bend in the form of a ring, and tie it with some plaited rushes.
Then get rushes and cut them in lengths of a foot or so, and procure three long rushes and plait them.
Take the cut rushes, put them along the ring and be with the plaited ones. Put all the ends together and tie with a piece of twine.
Get a big piece of cardboard, cut a circle out of it and then cut a hole in the same size as the ring of the hat.
Put the cardboard down over the rushes and stitch with a rush.
The hat is then ready for wear.- Collector
