- The famine started in this country in 1846 and ended in 1848. The potato crop failed all over the country. It affected this part of the country very badly.
In Borrisoleigh there was only very little food, and many died. When the children were going to school in the year of the famine they used to eat the leaves off the trees.
It affected the poor people most for they had no money to buy food. If any person found himself taking the fever he went out, hid in a ditch, and died a miserable death.- Collector
