- Candle making.
Long ago when there were no candles in the shops, the people used to make candles of their own. The name of the pot they used to melt the fat in, was called a "laid". When the fat was melted it was called tallow, and then the people used to get a pint, and take some of the liquid and pour it on the cords, till they had a fair-sized candle made. They had a tube a little smaller than the candle into which they forced the candle while it was soft, and it would come out round, and completely finished.- Collector
