He found it very hard to pick up the German language and his officer was always on to him. All soldiers were required to answer the following questions: How old are you? and, how long have you been in the army?, the age was twenty three years and the term in the army one month. When asked of the Irishman in presence of officers his answers were "Twenty three years in the army and one month old".13. Some years ago an old man lived in the town of Callan, who was very fond of intoxicating drink. One day as he was drunk on the street he was met by a priest "You'r drunk again to-day" said the priest. "Oh! I am not" said the man "Do you know Our Lord died on the cross for you" said the priest. "Oh! no said the man I did not come by the Cross, it was by Newmarket Lane I came.
