- Little farther on from the Sweat House we meet
Athassel Abbey. It was inhabited by Monks.
Cromwell banished them when he came to Ireland.
They left in groups of four and proceeded to Cahir
Abbey. On their way the first four thought of a
book which they had forgotten. They sent back a
messenger but by the time he reached Athassel
the last man was turning the key in the Abbey
door.
There lived in the Abbey a noble called Earl
Ruhu. A poor man tired and hungry passed
that way and seeing (on) the fine Abbey he went
down and knocked at the door. A servant came
out and the man asked her if she could help him
She said she could not. He asked if he could see
his honour. His honour appeared and the hungry
man asked him for something to eat. Earl
Ruhu told him to be gone from about his residence.
The poor man asked him for something in the
honour of God as he was dying of hunger, but the
Earl only told him to clear out of his place.
As the poor man was going away he turned back
and said "I am dying of hunger may you die
with the drought."
Soon after the Earl got sick and he was so
