    Newtown is mentioned in a song called 'Lovely Cappawhite' in the lines: -
    Farewell to Anacarty and to sweet Carhue
    Farewell I say to Bonerea, Glassdrom, and Newtown too.
    The land is very fertile but there are some bogs near Greenfield where turf was cut in former times. There are three hills called Ballinafad, O'Brien's Hill and Newtown fort. Newtown fort is situated in Carew's land. On the top of the hill there is a heap of stones where marks of excavations can be traced out. A man named William Carew tilled it but had no luck ever after. He later died in the asylum.
