  1. (continued from previous page)
a lighted candle in one hand and a mirror in the other and they were supposed to see the man they were going to marry in the mirror when they reached the foot of the stairs. I was told that a girl backed down the stairs at twelve o'clock in the night with a mirror in one hand and a lighted candle in the other and when she was only three or four steps from the foot of the stairs she fell down and broke her neck.
Another old custom was they used to wash their nightdresses in the night and put down a good fire to dry it, leaving it before the fire to dry, and it was said if they watched at twelve they would see the future husband coming and turning the nightdresses.
I have being told that a girl washed her nightdresses and stayed up untill twelve o'clock and while she was watching some spirit came and turned it, and she died in about a month after.
