    did so.Then the stonecutter related how he came to his house ,on such a day ,asked for work or alms ,and was chased away because he was all tattered and torn and looked like a tramp.Today i have good clothes ,and am respectable looking ,so i am admitted That day I was so vexed, that i went to your gate and carved six D's" ,which mean The Devil,Dam Damnable Denis Daly of Dunsandle .
    (Denis Daly was the gentleman's name)
    The gentleman was very much taken down .he did not expect this.He was very annoyed as he had spoken of the six D's" to some of his neighbours and did not know how he would explain them.
    He offered forty pounds to the stonecutter if he would go down to the gate and remove the six D's".He also made him promise that he would never mention what happened to any living soul.The stonecutter and his employer went away quite delighted with themselves.
