  1. People get married mostly in Shrove. The people are in the habit of getting married on Sundays, Tuesdays and Saturdays. Some people say that it is not lucky to get married in May or September. Others say that is not lucky to get married in October.
When people are getting married they first make a match for the boy and girl. Then they go to the nearest town and draw "writings". Then they the girls people walk the land and when the land is walked they appoint a certain day to get married. The week before they get married the boy goes to the girls house and they have a party and they call it the "picking of the gander" When they are getting married now they have motorcars and about ten years ago they had sidecars. Forty years ago they used to go in horseback to the chapel to be married. The girl sitting sidesaddle behind the man. After the marriage there would be seven or eight horses and they start a race to know which of them would be a t the bride's hose the first.
That night they have a wedding and a great crowd of people gather and they have a dance and they have a half barrel of porter and they have a great night.
