- About sixty years ago an old man named Paddy D Burley, who lived at Kilnamona, in the County of Clare, told the following story to my grandfather, from whom it has been handed to myself.
He dreamt there was a crock of gold hidden in a place called "Haverty's Grove" near Magowna Castle, formerly the territory of the O'Deas. He told some of his comrades. They went to the P. Priest to get water blessed to take to the place. The also provided some whiskey to give them courage.
He and three other men came to the place about midnight and began to dig with spades and shovels. They had worked for about an hour when they heard the roaring of a bull quite near them.
As he approached near, the place became enveloped in darkness, so that they had to cease work. Some of them became so frightened that they asked to have the holy water sprinkled on them. The roaring became more terrific and seemed nearer. They called for some whiskey but could not see where it was. They ceased work and had to remain till morning.
