- The famine wasn't so severe in Ennistymon as in other parts of Ireland. The people used to be dying by the roadside. The workhouses were packed and many people used to die every day. When some people used to pass gardens, they used to pick turnips and eat them. Other people used to eat grass boiled nettles and dandelion. One time there was a man found dying by the roadside and he had grass in his mouth.
