23rd May 1938 - There are three forges in the parish of Cooley. The nearest one to this school is situated in Glenmore, and is owned by Mr Patrick Barry. The second is in Rathcor, and is owned by Mr William Smyth. The third one is in Whitestown, and is owned by Mr Marks. Mr Patrick Barry's forge is not long in existence, and nobody remembers a blacksmith's forge in Glenmore before. Mr Smyth's ancestors were blacksmiths and his is a very old forge. Mr Marks's ancestors were blacksmiths also. The three forges are not far from the county road. A stream flows down beside Mr Barry's forge. The roof is made of light laths and tarred felt. The door is much larger than an ordinary door. There is a large fire-place in the forge, because if it was not big, the blacksmith would not be(continues on next page)
