- There are two kinds of churns a barrel churn and a dash churn. We have a dash churn at home it is about ten or eleven years old. It is about thirty inches high and about twenty inches wide. There is a long handle with a round piece of wood with holes in it for churning the milk.
There are three parts in the churn, the handle, the lid and the churn. Before churning you have to scrub and clean the churn well to take out any dirt, then you put in the milk, it takes and hour to churn the milk in the summer and it takes longer in the winter when the milk is cold. When the milk is churned, the churn is washed down with cold water, and the butter is made up.
