“At Bellewstown races, the well-to-do farmers brought carts...”
At the Bellewstown races, the well-to-do farmers brought carts called "Spoke Wheel Carts". There were steps up to them and low wheels on them. Mattresses were put into them, and off they went to the races.
On ordinary days, the steps were taken off and guards put on, and they were used for farm work around the farm.- At the White Horse Hotel a man came from Bushmills, Co. Antrim, to clip a horse for Captain Mac Noughten.
He clipped away with scissors and comb, and he had somebody holding a candle for him. He was all night clipping the horse.That was the only way of clipping horses at that time, (which was about sixty yeas ago.)
