Long ago, on the 12th May fair, which lasted for four days, buyers came from Belgium and France etc. The whole place was done up. The houses were white-washed, and the yards padded with straw a couple of feet high for safety for the horses. Every stable in, and around the town for miles, was taken up.wat- Years ago, in Drogheda, old women, past their labour, used go around, early in the morning, from door to door with small sticks in their hands. They used to knock at the doors with their sticks to call up the mill girls.
