These monks were brought from England & were very English in outlook so that they were never very kindly disposed towards the Irish people of the place. The Monastery was disestablished by Henry VIII about 1539 same time as Mellifont.
Castle Rag & St Mary's Abbey.
There is an old abbey called St Mary's Abbey". The old castle which stands beside the abbey was the residence of a Cistercian Order of Monks. The walls of an old Cistercian Monastery can be seen(continues on next page)
