- 228Old HousesNearly all the old houses were very small. They were built of yellow clay mixed with short strands of hay and water. The hay was to keep the clay stuck together. When the water was mixed with the clay and hay it then turned into mortar. Walls about a foot and a half wide were built with this mortar. The old houses were usually built in a queer shape. There used to be many passages and few rooms in the old houses. The roofs were thatched and some of them were covered with stones. Every third year after the thrashing had been done the houses were thatched with straw. The fire place in the kitchen was usually at the gable end of the house.
