The district was very well populated before this time there were a lot of houses from the end of Chapel St up to Frayne and from Bridge St down to Gilstown and at the far end of Connaught St. There were houses from Gilstown across the Cow Park and across the river over to Connaught St.
There are not to be seen now. The year of the famine was wet and when the potatoes were planted they could not be tilled not even clay put to them and then they could not grow and they rotted in the ground.
They got seed potatoes from Scotland they planted them in drills and ridges.
