giving his bicycle to a volunteer named Bartle Reilly to go to Nobber on a message. The leader of the volunteers in my locality was a man named John Bennett of Carlanstown who was well assisted by James Reilly of Gravelstown and Paddy Mooney of Staholmog. The latter was killed in a volunteer lorry coming from Drogheda when the driver who was drunk drove the lorry against a tree. A wooden cross where he was killed is to be seen on the right hand side of the road near Slane.
