- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)While basking 'neath fortune's bright sun
Your nominal friends are not few;
But if by misfortune undone,
These vanish, like rainbows or dew.
You bid me "say something of self,"
The best of which tale must be bad;
And he who's not eager for pelf,
Is deemed either foolish or mad.
And I must be either, indeed,
As I am no lover of wealth;
Still pleased, with what God has decreed
For me, true contentment and health.
I sigh not for pensions nor wreaths -
My labour gains plenty for men;
And cringe to no mortal that breathes -
And though but dependent, still free.
Still high to the haughty and vain -
Respectful and meek to the wise -
Knaves, coxcombs, and bigots disdain,
And hypocrites truly dispise.
I speak to all men as I think,
Which gains me less plaudits than blame;
But better by candour to sink,
Than clamber through meanness to fame!
From great ones I seek not regard,
Nor court them in poetic rant -(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
