- Ms Gilsenan, who lives in Skerry, about a mile and a half from the school, has the cure of the 'Heart-ache', and also 'the burst'. Ms Cassidy, who lives in Archestown, can cure boils, ringworm, and running-worm. Pat Foynes, who lives in Gortloney, being the seventh son in a family, has the cure of ring-worm and 'the burst'. It is said that the poultice which is applied to 'the burst' is made up of the following herbs:
The Plantain leaf, the stinging nettle, and the Sweet meadow. They are pounded into pulp and mixed with lard, snuff and nitre. There are no prayers to be said, and no charms are used in applying this cure. In winter when the above plants are not in bloom, their roots are dug up and used.
In this locality a large red boil on any part of the body is called 'the Rose'. The cure for this is in the Lough Rua (Red Lake) in the district of Knocklough. Long ago a fight took place on the shore of this lake and its waters(continues on next page)- Collector
