  1. About the year 1846 the farmers were unable to pay rents owing to failure of crops in the famine years. A great portion of Westmeath was owned by the Duke of Buckinham who sold out his property in different portions to different men who became the landlords.
    Some of them were very good to their tenants and some proved very bad. On some of those properties "wholesale" was carried out in order for the landlords to come and live on it. In Ballinscarry, Tullystown Co. Westmeath there were twenty one families evicted on one day. Their houses were knocked down and walls
