The crowds were almost mad with excitement, hats were flung in the air and then with a final burst Cunniffe took the lead and was declared winner by a few feet. The crowd surged around the two men who were shaking hands with each other and the winner was heard to say. "I wouldn't like to run another race against you."

   Not alone in running races were the local men famous for but also for dancing. Two of the most famous men around here for dancing were John Dalton and Paddy Lee. The former was a native of the townland of Garthy the latter was from Lisnagree and they always went together. At a pattern near Donore there was held a dancing competition and some of the most famous dancers in Westmeath were present. All was going well and every Irish step dance conceivable, was danced, reel, jig and hornpipe and the judge was in a quandary as to whom he would award the prize when the two partners jumped on the stage
