    ground. The Government Relief Works were a long time about reaching this district. During these years the hill above Gleesons was raised and the hill at the grove was lowered. People still remember the years with a shudder and we can safely say that they are the worst our unfortunate country has ever experienced.

  2. The old people of this area have many stories to relate about the great famine of 1846 and '47. Before the Famine there was a large population in this district but it did not suffer as much from the famine in the first year as in the second, the second being the most severe.
