- On New Year's Eve in the west of Ireland, it is the custom to light a candle from 5 o'clock in the evening until 12 o'clock that night. This candle - light is supposed to welcome Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph. On that night 1937 years ago they left the cave at Bethlehem and retired to another place.
This is not done in the Midlands but people light a candle on Christmas Eve, to welcome the Divine Babe at midnight.- Collector
