The year previous to the Great Famine the potato crop was so abundant that the people piled the potatoes in heaps behind the ditches to rot and it was quite the opposite the following year. The potatoes decayed in the ground. Seed potatoes for the following year were imported from Scotland. The people ate weeds, turnips, and oatenmeal. They often walked miles for a stone or a half stone of Indian meal. They used to eat "Gruel" the same as pigs eat now. Government relief did not reach this district.
