    myself. "Off you go now, and seek your fortune." Tom's father and mother did not know him when he came back, and he did not tell them who he was. The two old people were living in a tiny hut, and they were as poor as church mice. Their farm had been taken from them by a cruel blacksmith.
    When Tom Thumb heard this, he went to the blacksmith and asked for work.
    "No wages at all," said Tom. "All I ask is that you let me give you two taps on the shoulders every evening."
    "I'll let you do that and welcome," said the smith.
    So Tom started to make a horseshoe. The first blow he struck broke the anvil into fifty pieces, and the second knocked the roof of the forge.
    "Stop!" shouted the smith. "You'll work here no longer."
    "I'll take my day's wages then,"
