   and fours looking for sticks. When they have the sticks got they pile them up near the place.

   That night when it is just dark all the young people gather to the place. Then the fire is lighted and the place is filled with a wild cheer from the crowd and then the sticks and turf is piled on. All remain round the fire until it is burned out which is usually about eleven o clock.

   "Chalk" Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent. It is also called "Pus" Sunday. People call it those names because they say the girls who are not married have a 'pus' on them. They also mark them with chalk and that is why it is called "Chalk "Sunday." All the girls are said to be in bad humour and people tease them and say they will never be married when they were not married before Lent.
