  1. Shops were not common in olden days. People had to go to the nearest town to purchase their goods. Money was not always given in exchange for goods. They used to give butter and eggs in exchange for groceries.
    When selling animals the words swap, exchange etc., were used. Friday is looked upon as a lucky day and therefore work is always began on that day.
    Hawkers go round in this district gathering rags and feathers and bottles. They also gather old rings and spoons. They give delph in exchange for them. In former times fourpenny bits were in use.
