There seems to be - what is natural - a difference of opinion as to whether the Castlemains were "good" men or "bad" men. Locals agree they were "good" now in connection with the attempted shooting spoken of on page 6. the Carriage was travelling on the road between Moate and Athlone, in what direction I don't know, and a man (?) Was waiting with a gun under his coat. As the carriage approached the wind blew the man's coat from over the gun and exposed him. There was no shooting.
There is a current story told as to how Moydrum Castle got its name.
The Ancestor of the Castlemain Family was only a drummer in the army of Ginkel marching to Athlone 1690. As he was passing through this neighbourhood he dropped his drum and exclaimed "oh, my drum." He was later granted this same land and since then it is known as "mydrum" (as it is pronounced locally).
