  1. 2 About fifty years ago there lived in Tang a man named John Ward. He carried eight cwt. up eight steps of a ladder, where he was building a house. The people of the district went to see the stone he carried up the ladder. He only laughed at them and he said it was a very small lift for a strong man. So to prove his strength to these people he put a log which weighed fifteen cwt. standing on its ends.
He was about forty years of age when he did this.
