  2. The local fairs are held in the towns. The fairs are sometimes held in the streets and sometimes in the fair-green. Luck-money or luck penny which it is sometimes called is given to the purchaser of the cattle. When the bargain has been made the two parties concerned would shake-hands with each other. When the cattle are sold they are marked on the back. January fair in Athlone is one of the biggest fairs of the year. Special fairs are held for pigs and sometimes cattle, sheep and horses are sold at the one fair.
